If you're dreaming of a wedding that feels like stepping into another era — where grand columns frame your first kiss, climbing roses line the path to your ceremony, and a spiral staircase becomes the backdrop for your first dance — then Antrim 1844 might already be on your radar.

And if it isn't, it should be.

As a documentary wedding photographer based in Maryland, I've had the privilege of photographing weddings at some of the most beautiful venues in the state. Antrim 1844 in Taneytown, Maryland is consistently one of my favorites — not just because it's visually stunning, but because it tells a story. And as someone who believes that the best wedding photos aren't posed but lived — this place gives couples so much to live in.

Here's my complete insider's guide to getting married (and photographed) at Antrim 1844.

About Antrim 1844

Nestled at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains in Taneytown, Maryland, Antrim 1844 is a 24-acre historic estate that has been masterfully restored by owners Richard and Dorothy Mollett to reflect its original 1844 splendor. It's just 20 minutes from Gettysburg and 45 minutes from Frederick, making it a convenient and beautiful destination for couples across the DMV area.

The estate is a member of Historic Hotels of America and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places — an honor that speaks to the depth of history you feel the moment you arrive. This isn't a venue that tries to look historic. It simply is.

From the grand Greek Revival manor house to the award-winning Formal English Tea Rose Gardens (ranked among the Top 25 Historic Gardens by Historic Hotels of America), every corner of this property carries a quiet elegance that simply can't be replicated. Walking the grounds feels like stepping into a different century — and for couples who want their wedding photos to feel truly timeless, that's a powerful thing.

The Outdoor Spaces: Where Every Moment Becomes a Photograph

One of the most common questions I get from couples is: "When should we schedule our portraits for the best light?"

My answer as a documentary photographer is always the same: there is no single best time — because the best photos don't come from perfect lighting. They come from the moments and the connection between you two. Whether it's the soft glow of mid-morning, the warmth of a late afternoon, or the dramatic clouds of an overcast day, what matters most is that you're present, relaxed, and fully in the moment with each other. I'll take care of the rest.

That said, Antrim 1844's outdoor spaces are so varied and beautiful that no matter when your portraits fall in your timeline, there's always a stunning setting waiting.

The Rose Garden

The Formal English Tea Rose Gardens are a photographer's dream. Structured pathways lined with roses in every color, bronze fountains catching the light, and a sense of romance that feels both timeless and intimate. This is one of my favorite places to capture couples in quiet, unhurried moments — a hand held gently, a laugh shared mid-sentence, a look that says everything words can't. The rose garden has a way of making people slow down, and that's exactly where the best photos happen.

The Manor House as a Backdrop

Beyond the rose garden, the sweeping lawns offer wide, dramatic portraits with the full manor house as a backdrop — grand columns, stately brickwork, and historic architecture that gives your photos a sense of scale and elegance. This is the kind of image that will look just as beautiful on your wall in 30 years as it does today.

The Hidden Details

What I love most about Antrim 1844 is that the beauty doesn't stop at the obvious spots. The long allées of mature trees create natural framing for candid walking shots. Covered walkways and garden walls offer intimate, shaded spaces. Wrought iron gates and stone pathways lead to quiet corners that feel entirely private — even on a full wedding day. You could spend an entire afternoon outside and never run out of places that take your breath away.

The Indoor Spaces: 19th-Century Elegance at Every Turn

While the outdoor spaces are extraordinary, one of my favorite things about Antrim 1844 is what happens when you step inside.

The Rooms and Interiors

The interior of the manor is decorated in authentic early 19th-century style, and the attention to detail is remarkable. Every room — from the bedrooms and parlors to the library, sitting rooms, and even the hallways — has been thoughtfully preserved with period-appropriate furnishings, rich color palettes, original hardwood floors, and decorative details that feel genuinely historical rather than staged. The warm tones of the wallpapers, the texture of the antique furniture, the soft light filtering through tall windows — every element gives you something beautiful to work with.

Even the smaller spaces carry that same elegance. It's the kind of interior where you can point your camera in almost any direction and find a story.

The Spiral Staircase

My absolute favorite spot in the entire estate is the spiral staircase.

It's one of those architectural details that stops you in your tracks the first time you see it — sweeping, grand, and impossibly romantic. I often invite couples to stand together on the staircase for portraits, letting the curve of the banister frame them naturally. Or I'll ask them to dance at the base of the stairs while I position myself on the upper landing, shooting down through the spiral. That elevated, bird's-eye perspective creates an image that feels cinematic and completely unique — one of those photos that couples always pause at when going through their gallery for the first time.

When weather or timing calls for an indoor session, Antrim 1844 never feels like a backup plan. It feels like a destination in itself.

A Final Note

Antrim 1844 is the kind of venue that doesn't need to be dressed up. It already carries so much beauty, history, and character that my job as your photographer is simply to stay present, stay out of the way, and let your love story unfold within it.

I've photographed couples here who were nervous in front of the camera — and within minutes, surrounded by roses and history and the warmth of this place, they forgot I was there. Those are always the photos they love most.
